I love Mr Lovegates linoleum printing very much. Unsurprising, coming from someone whose concept of lino printing comes from being presented shoddy uninspiring examples like this and this. I love the odd characters who seem to live in their own world of colour and stumpy limbs, but might also look uncannily alike to that man or lady, man-lady you passed by on the way to Tesco’s for your loaf.
I had pretty much given up on hoping that the possibility of gauging chunks of flesh from my fingers would be far outweighed by the results that I’d achieve from carving what is essentially, really wallpaper for floors.
But Mr Lovegates work shows different potentials of this medium. The work is painstaking detailed, the number of colours in each piece, and the time it must take to ink up, the layering…all kind of makes my head hurt to try understand it all. In a extremely fantastic way.
Enjoy more of Mr Lovegates work on his flickr.
Or maybe catch him in action.
